Civil Society Calls on FTC to Review Unchecked Consolidation in the Cloud Computing Industry

NextGen Competition joins letter highlighting the unfair monopolistic practices of Amazon Web Services

Jun 22, 2023

The following statement can be attributed to George Rakis, Executive Director for NextGen Competition (nextgencomp.tech):

We're proud to join others in conveying our concerns about the unchecked consolidation of power over cloud computing infrastructure by a few corporations—chief among them Amazon Web Services (AWS). The effort underway at the FTC is a critical step in developing the record as the Commission further investigates the monopolistic behavior within the cloud computing industry.

AWS has become a critical tool leveraged by Amazon to entrench itself in all aspects of consumers' lives. It has wielded its dominance to become an unstoppable monopoly threatening every aspect of the economy. Everything from streaming video to online shopping to AI applications relies on this critical cloud infrastructure, so the fight over who controls the cloud is really a fight over who owns the future of the digital economy. It's time for the FTC to act!
