NextGen Competition Statement on Judge Mehta’s Google Search Remedies Ruling

On Tuesday, September 2, 2025, US District Judge Amit Mehta issued remedies in the Google search monopolization case.

The following statement can be attributed to Sumit Sharma, Executive Director for NextGen Competition (nextgencomp.tech):

“Today’s ruling is a win for Google because it can continue to pay for default placements on iPhones, OEMs, and browsers. None of the other proposed remedies - a one time access to Google’s search index or syndication based largely on existing commercial contracts - compensates for Google’s ability to keep distribution locked up.

This judgment is an incremental step to open up competition in a market where speed is essential as evidenced by the development and take-up of Gen AI products between the liability and remedy stage. Given that Google is likely to appeal this ruling, it is unclear when any of these remedies will be implemented.

We will continue pushing for effective, timely relief that promotes robust competition, unlocks innovation, and delivers real choice for users and developers.”
